A damaged photograph almost never fails in one way. A print that's been sitting in a box for thirty years usually has fading, surface scratches, foxing (the small brown spots caused by mold or oxidation), a crease or two, and sometimes a torn corner — all layered on top of each other. Restoration isn't one filter applied to the whole image. It's a sequence of separate fixes, each addressing one kind of damage, applied in an order that doesn't make the next step harder.

Cleanup comes before color

The first pass is always physical damage: dust, scratches, creases, tears, and missing chunks. This gets done before any color or tone correction, because color work on top of visible damage just produces a cleaner-looking scratch. Scratches and dust are removed by sampling nearby texture and rebuilding the area underneath — skin, sky, fabric, whatever was there — rather than smearing or blurring over the mark. A blur hides a scratch by destroying detail around it too; a proper repair rebuilds only the damaged pixels.

Fading and tonal reconstruction

Old prints fade unevenly — usually the highlights blow out first and the shadows lose separation, so the whole image drifts toward a flat gray-brown midtone. Fixing this means rebuilding the tonal range: pulling real black back into the shadows, real white back into the highlights, and restoring contrast in between without crushing detail that's already thin. This is done locally, not with one global contrast slider, because different areas of an old print fade at different rates depending on how they were originally exposed and how the print was stored.

Missing detail and facial reconstruction

When part of a photo is physically gone — a torn corner, a water stain that erased an area entirely — that detail has to be rebuilt rather than restored, since there's nothing left to recover. If the missing area includes a face, this is the most delicate part of the whole process. The reconstruction has to stay consistent with the lighting direction, skin tone, and bone structure visible in the rest of the face. A reconstruction that's too confident tends to look generic; a good one stays conservative and lets the surrounding real detail do most of the work.

Color contamination and colorization

Old color prints often have a color cast from the film or paper chemistry aging — a yellow, magenta, or cyan tint sitting over the whole image. That has to be neutralized before anything else, since it throws off skin tones and makes accurate correction difficult. For black-and-white photos being colorized, color is added manually and layered — skin, hair, clothing, background — rather than applied as a single tint, so that different materials still read as different materials once color is added.

Sharpening and noise come last

Sharpening and noise reduction happen at the end, after the structural repairs are done, because sharpening a still-damaged area just makes the damage more visible. Applied too early or too aggressively, sharpening also creates a harsh, digital look that undercuts the point of restoration — the goal is a photograph that looks like a well-preserved original, not a modern digital image with an old photo underneath it.

Why over-restoration backfires: pushing noise reduction, sharpening, or color saturation past what the source detail can support doesn't make an old photo look newer — it makes it look artificial. Skin loses texture and turns waxy, grain disappears and takes fine detail with it, and colors that never existed in the original get introduced. The best restorations are the ones where the repair work isn't obvious at all — the photo just looks like it aged well.

Every damaged photograph is different, which is why restoration doesn't scale well to a one-click automatic tool — the order of operations, and how far to push each fix, depends entirely on what's actually wrong with that specific print.
